GE Launches New Line of Appliances – the GE Café Series with Restaurant–Inspired Appearance and Features for People who Love to Cook and Entertain

You've seen those kitchens on the home cable channels – so shiny and pristine that it certainly raises the question whether anyone actually cooks in these temples to culinary nirvana.

Now, the new GE Café series offers a suite of appliances for the rest of us—those who not only love the look of stainless steel wrapped technology but who actually love to cook and entertain family and friends. The fact that each appliance is free–standing in configuration also makes this an easy upgrade for nearly everyone.

Harris Interactive® recently fielded an online survey investigating family dining habits on behalf of SuperTarget. The survey found that 54% of the parents surveyed report cooking dinner at least five times a week. Two–thirds of those surveyed report cooking dinner more than half of the time (at least four times per week).

Kitchens are also expanding in size considerably, becoming an area to not only eat, but a more café–style space in which people wish to pass time relaxing with friends and loved ones. In fact, from 1950–2004 the average size of the kitchen increased 216%, while the home itself increased by only 72% in size (US Census Bureau).

Many people are upgrading their kitchens to reflect their interest in cooking and desire to entertain while capturing the ambience of a restaurant quality kitchen. Café was designed for these people. This affordable suite also comes with all the performance features home chefs would expect:

GE Introduces Next-Generation Custom Design Concepts for Refrigerators

GE Appliances has once again demonstrated its leadership and innovation in refrigerator design. Today at Confortec, the company introduced to the European market a new range of styles for its GE Profileâ„¢ line which allows consumers more freedom than ever before in design choices for their refrigerators.

Innovative designs, personalized style

For the first time, GE customers can choose to decorate their refrigerator doors with any of twelve photographic images, available by special order, including views of the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre, and outer space. They can also provide their own photography or artwork, which can be enlarged and fitted to the doors by GE's design staff.

In addition to the use of photography, GE unveiled a number of other new design concepts for its refrigerators at Confortec. Among them were doors covered with erasable blackboards and whiteboards, which allow consumers to transform their refrigerator doors into huge memo pads or family art galleries. GE also displayed several new metallic finishes, including brushed and stainless steel, and patterned aluminium.

Quality and innovation both inside and outside

Exterior design is only the beginning of the GE designer refrigeration story. GE's side-by-side refrigerators, the reference in their category, are designed as well inside as they are outside, to save energy and preserve food better and for longer periods of time than ever before.

Most of the Profileâ„¢ side-by-side models have an adaptive electronic defrost system that optimizes the time and duration of ice removal in order to maintain ideal storage temperatures while minimizing energy usage. Fruits and vegetables stay crisp longer and meat and dairy products remain fresher, while ice never builds up on the inside surfaces.

Every detail of the refrigerators' interior layouts is designed for convenience. The spillproof shelves prevent overflow and ease cleaning in case of accidents. A retractable shelf makes space for tall bottles, and the door even includes a refrigerated bar compartment for instant access to the most frequently used items. The GE ShelfSaverâ„¢ is the ultimate convenience for storing beverage cans.

The U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have awarded GE Consumer & Industrial the ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year

The U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have awarded GE Consumer & Industrial the ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year "Sustained Excellence" award for the second year in a row in recognition of GE's outstanding commitment to creating high–performance household appliance and lighting products that help reduce energy spending and protect the environment. GE will officially be recognized at a March 21 ceremony in Washington D.C. This is also the fourth year GE has been recognized as an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year. "Partners like GE are outstanding leaders in protecting our environment through energy efficiency," said Bill Wehrum, acting assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Air and Radiation. "As one of the 2007 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence winners, GE has taken energy efficiency to new heights year after year and we all benefit." GE has aggressively supported the ENERGY STAR program through broad consumer and customer education and has participated in national and regional events promoting ENERGY STAR products to consumers, customers and homebuilders. "GE's energy–efficient products also play a key role in our ecomaginationSM initiative," said James P. Campbell, President and Chief Executive Officer of GE Consumer & Industrial. "This initiative, which launched in 2005, focuses on harnessing GE's imagination to bring new technologies to market that help solve challenges like reducing green house gas emissions and stretching increasingly limited energy resources." ENERGY STAR AppliancesFrom 2002–2006, GE invested more than $405 million to develop and bring to market high–efficiency appliances products. A broad range of GE Monogram®, GE Profile™, GE®, and Hotpoint® brand clothes washers, refrigerators, dishwashers, room air conditioners, dehumidifiers and water products are ENERGY STAR qualified. In 2006 alone, GE invested $55 million in ENERGY STAR appliance models to create 309 new models — up 31% over 2005. Currently, GE Consumer & Industrial offers 519 ENERGY STAR qualified appliances, representing 50% of all GE appliance products. This offering includes:

* ENERGY–STAR qualified dishwashers. One of the most innovative products on the market is the ENERGY STAR qualified GE Profile™ dishwasher with SmartDispense™ technology, which allows the dishwasher door to hold an entire 45 fluid ounce bottle of liquid or gel dishwasher detergent and dispense just the right amount for each wash. If all Americans used ENERGY STAR qualified GE Profile dishwashers, more than 20 billion gallons of water would be saved per year — enough to fill 25,000 Olympic swimming pools.
* ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators. Innovations like dual–evaporator technology improve energy efficiency and food freshness. ENERGY STAR qualified GE refrigerators use 40% less energy than conventional models sold in 2001, and about 50% less than models manufactured before 1993.
* ENERGY STAR qualified washers. GE topload washers with automatic temperature controls and more energy–efficient drain pumps and motors now use less water. And the GE frontload washer saves up to 23 gallons per average–size load, or 61% less water*.
* ENERGY Star qualified room air conditioners. GE offers consumers plenty of cool choices when shopping for room air conditioners. Replacing a 10–year–old room air conditioner with a new GE ENERGY STAR qualified model means consumers can save up to 25% in operating costs and they will use at least 10% less energy than with conventional new models.

ENERGY STAR Lighting ProductsGE Energy Smart™ Light Bulbs with Compact Fluorescent technology (CFLs) are ENERGY STAR qualified — offering energy savings of up to 75% and lasting up to 10 times longer than a standard incandescent. In 2006, more than 99% of GE Energy Smart™ Bulbs sold were ENERGY STAR qualified. In addition, GE Consumer & Industrial's Lighting division offers 67 ENERGY STAR qualified lighting products, making GE a leader in energy–efficient lighting products. GE works closely with major retailers to drive awareness of Energy Smart bulbs through broad consumer and customer outreach campaigns and is an avid supporter of the ENERGY STAR "Change a light, Change the World" Campaign. In 2006, 99.7% of screw–in CFL products sold by GE were Energy Star qualified. Over their lifetime, the ENERGY STAR qualified lighting products that GE sold in 2006 will reduce consumers' electricity costs by $1.3 billion and prevent one trillion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions by power plants, the equivalent of removing eight million cars from the road for one year. *As compared to a typical washer, WWSE5240

GE Brings its ecomaginationSM initiative to the Carolinas

GE Consumer & Industrial and RWO Acquisitions today announced the first of several anticipated agreements to build one of the country's first communities incorporating GE's ecomagination Homebuilder Program at Withers Preserve in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. RWO and GE agree that this master–planned community designed to promote healthy lifestyles and smart land use is the perfect place to build this high–performance home of the future.

"While the new urbanism that inspired this community celebrates the values and traditions of our rich American heritage, our participation in the GE ecomagination Homebuilder Program adds an important leading–edge environmental efficiency component to Withers Preserve, making this a true 21st century home town," said RWO Acquisitions CEO Robert W. O'Neel.

Under this program, homes in Withers Preserve will meet the high standards set by GE and Masco Contractor Services' Environments for Living® (EFL) program to help ensure energy–efficient homes. The homes will feature GE products inspired by its ecomagination initiative — including appliances, lighting products, solar panels, and a new GE SmartCommand™ Dashboard, which provides current and historical feedback on electricity and water consumption.

Homes built to GE ecomagination Homebuilder Program specifications are designed to achieve the following compared to industry–accepted average new homes:

* at least 20% household energy savings
* at least 20% savings on household indoor water consumption
* at least 20% fewer household emissions of CO2, SO2, and Nox

RWO Acquisitions joins GE in the belief that solving environmental problems is good business, with GE's ecomagination initiative as the centerpiece for a positive growth strategy.

In addition to GE energy efficient products, the Withers Preserve community will also be using other products from the GE portfolio, including GE Money, GE Security and Smart Home Structured Wiring solutions, and GE's suite of electrical distribution products, including GE loadcenters with surge protection, decorative bath fans, temporary power solutions, and more.

A neo–traditional community of single–family homes, town homes and condominiums, Withers Preserve offers the best in coastal Carolina living. Broad, tree–shaded sidewalks meander past the wide front porches lining neighborhood streets. Small town America at its best lives here where sun–splashed parks echo with children's laughter while sparkling lakes and quiet, wooded paths invite long walks and time for calming reflection.

In addition to the residential neighborhoods, Withers Preserve residents will enjoy a vibrant, new downtown at the 113–acre Market Common. Embracing the new urbanism that has captured the imagination of the country, The Market Common offers an exciting mix of dining, shopping and entertainment venues. This is the new "town square" where people of all ages meet and mingle.
The 900–acre residential community is being developed by RWO in harmony with the master–planned redevelopment program under the direction of the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base Redevelopment Authority (MBAFRA). This impressive public/private project includes a 3,970–acre parcel of land with $30 million of new infrastructure including 29 acres of lakes, over 200 acres of new community parks and four miles of new roads. GE announces new ecomaginationSM Homebuilder Program — a blueprint for building green homes

Today in Los Angeles, GE and Masco Contractor Services' (MCS) Environments for Living® division celebrated the announcement of the ecomagination Homebuilder Program. This new program helps residential developers and builders design homes that are not only comfortable, but that are more efficient in their energy consumption and indoor water consumption than industry–accepted average new homes.

In the last two years, natural gas costs have risen 42 percent and electricity costs have risen 17 percent, according to a report in Energy Source, March 2007. The same report noted that 86 percent of recent homebuyers said they would choose an energy–efficient home over one that was not energy–efficient.

Versus industry–accepted average new homes, a home built to GE ecomagination Homebuilder Program specifications is designed to achieve:

* at least 20% household energy savings
* at least 20% savings on household indoor water consumption
* at least 20% fewer household emissions of CO2, SO2, and Nox

Energy–Efficient Components
Top reasons why homebuyers who want to live in a high–performance, energy–efficient home will choose homes built to GE ecomagination Homebuilder Program specifications include:

* New GE SmartCommand™ Dashboard: this interactive wall panel provides current and historical feedback on electricity and water consumption.

* GE® and GE Profile™ ENERGY STAR® appliances: pair innovative energy efficiency with groundbreaking features and cutting–edge design. Among the appliance choices are the GE Profile SmartDispense™ dishwasher, the GE Profile Frontload laundry pair, and GE or GE Profile refrigerators.

* GE advanced lighting package: includes indoor and outdoor lighting. At least 50% of the standard socket lamps in the home will use GE Energy Smart™ lamps with compact fluorescent technology. GE CFLs consume up to 75% less electricity than standard incandescent lighting.

* GE Brilliance™ Solar Electric Power Systems (optional): if the home is equipped with solar power, this system is designed to produce power year after year and typically meets 20–30% of a home's electricity needs and works in conjunction with the local utility to provide complete service.

* GE Mortgage (optional): builders of these homes will have the option to recommend to qualifying homebuyers a mortgage offered by GE Money with financial incentives.

* The Environments for Living Certified Green program standards: apply to heating, ventilation, air–conditioning, ductwork and the outer shell or "building envelope" that surrounds a home's living quarters. This "envelope" includes tight construction, fresh air ventilation, improved insulation, efficient HVAC equipment, humidity control, pressure balancing and combustion safety.

Comfort and Energy Limited GuaranteesHomes built to ecomagination Homebuilder Program specifications will be built with an Environments for Living Certified Green classification. This standard employs advanced building science techniques in order to deliver both comfort and energy efficiency. Environments for Living offers a guarantee to the original homeowner that there will be no more than a three degree temperature differential from the center of any conditioned room within each thermostat zone.

Just this month, GE signed the first of several anticipated agreements with RWO Acquisitions to build the nation's first community built under the GE ecomagination Homebuilder Program in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Cleaner, clearer water doesn't have to come from a bottle

Fresh, clean water is essential to health, as nearly 70% of your body is water. It is common knowledge that every system in your body depends on water.

As any high school science student can tell you, water, or H20, is made up of one atom of oxygen and two atoms of hydrogen. Because of its molecular arrangement, water attracts all sorts of things including metals, bacteria, organic and inorganic chemicals, toxins, dissolved gasses, mud, sand and minerals.

Many consumers think the only way to get clean, better tasting water is to buy it in a bottle. Bottled water consumption in the US hit 8.25 billion gallons in 2006, 9.5 percent more than the amount consumed in 2005, according to a report released by the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) and the Beverage Marketing Corp. (BMC).

GE® Water filtration systems make it easy to enjoy better tasting water for drinking and cooking right from the tap. All GE systems are tested and approved by independent third parties such as the National Sanitation Foundation or the Water Quality Association, two leaders in standards development and product certification for public health and safety.

Consumers in many parts of the country simply want better tasting water. An efficient filtration system that passes the water through a filter containing activated carbon or charcoal is a great choice for faucets throughout the home. Each particle of activated charcoal possesses many cracks and nooks. A pound of it can have a surface area of up to 150 acres. When water passes over and through these cracks, there are many opportunities for the impurities in the water to stick to the carbon molecules. Not only are distinctive tastes and odors like chlorine filtered out of water, but also many harmful substances like benzene and mercury can be reduced to safe levels.

If your regional water contains a greater number of contaminants, the premium choice is a water filtration system that combines dual carbon filtration with reverse osmosis technology to filter particles 100,000 times smaller than a human hair. Reverse osmosis systems combine a semi–permeable membrane with two high–volume carbon filters to reduce up to 99 percent of present contaminants from drinking water.

GE recommends reverse osmosis, the top of the line water filtration, providing homeowners up to fifteen gallons of water per day. If selecting a carbon filtration system, make the selection based on the amount of water your total household consumes each day, as well as the types of contaminants found in the water supply. For renters, faucet filtration systems install in minutes without tools, fit most faucet types, and can go with you when you move out. Innovative GE Twist and Lock™ filters make filter changes easy with no need for tools, and no need to shut off the water supply.
